THE TAO OF ODDS AND ENDS

Kavanagh

Were you dreaming you were a butterfly, or is a butterfly dreaming it is you?

This novel takes three ancient Chinese Taoist stories from the Book of Chuang Tzu and re-tells them, setting them in the present-day West. They are all interconnected in an innovative way that is itself inspired by Chuang Tzu, and framed by a fourth story based on concepts from the equally ancient Tao Te Ching.

The stories' styles vary from something like the stillness of Amos Oz to a kind of Saki-esque dinner party to near-fairytale to melancholy surrealism, and is an exploration of what Taoism is all about and how it might or might not apply to the modern world.

WHAT THE OSTRICH SEES IN THE SAND

Kavanagh

An affluent couple decide to drop everything, withdraw from life and make a model village in their living room. The story features many amusing characters, including the couple's son, who is conducting an 'experiment' in their attic, and an old man who lives in a caravan writing 'tracts'.

This is primarily a fable about order and chaos, and the cycle of creation and destruction, replete with mystical analogies, but as it was written in the 1990s, it is also a surreal satire of the new materialist Ireland, and an apprehensive exploration of what the 'creative' life might mean.
